About

Meet my blogger and designer, Denalei
Denalei is always ahead of the trends, she predicted the return of crushed velvet, who knew?  She has an eye for fun and likes to create.  Her great knowledge of history adds to her creative knack for writing.  She can relate olden days to modern things because like she often says, she has an old soul.  If you need an idea, just ask her.  Her head is full of them.  Give her a sharpie marker and a magazine and she has planned our next project!
She is a mom to Jacob, that being her greatest work.

Meet my quilting assistant, Clarkie
Clarkie is my mom and she has made more quilts than she can count.  She is a retired school teacher and has offered to share her quilting techniques.  And my favorite part is she will be there to help fill that dining room table again like we used to.  She is very interesting, has great ideas, beautiful quilts and her generosity is too much!  Clarkmart is named for her as she always has ample supplies to work with however she has passed that torch to me now.  We always say, whoever has the most supplies, wins!  She taught me well.

Cars and Coffee with Charles Ray
I can’t leave out of my plan to have a quarterly gathering to drink coffee in the morning while we kick some old car tires.  I hope to have success to bring in some guys with old cars to inspire all ages to refurbish and restore something old.  What better project than an old car?  We won’t have any classes about restoring cars but you can certainly get some advice.  At the Urban Craft Center, it’s very much about re-purposing!  Look for my dad and his 41 Ford Flathead, his Model A, or his Corvair on a warm day in early 2019!  My dad is a huge helper at the Urban Craft Center.

Last but not least, meet my husband Glen
Glen ‘almost’ has my vision engraved in his mind.  I am surprising him first with the launch of this website!  He has allowed me to eventually redirect my career as a mechanical designer to an entrepreneur and business owner.  For those outdoorsy things, my husband has the talent and experience to get us started!  And….he has tools, willingness, and know-how for those projects!  Glen has been around the country as a hiker and a climber, he has his own blacksmith shed and likes anything nature related.  He is one of those guys that can do anything he sets his mind to.  But most of all, he supports my dream and has helped me get here.  Best husband ever.

Urban Craft Center Overnight Retreats
Times are much busier today, so at the Urban Craft Center, you can focus on just what you want by offering overnight accommodations….think of how much you can get done!  Away from chores and responsibilities, making new friends and new crafts or I’ve even been known to saddle up my taxes to bring to a retreat!  We can’t help you with your taxes, but we will be offering classes on just about any craft you can think of….sewing, quilting, cooking, crafting, scrapbooking, re-purposing, glass projects, Pinterest projects, wreaths, mixed media, board signs, soap making and so much more!  And for the not so crafty, we will offer fly fishing/fly tying, blacksmithing, hiking, photography, and junking!  We are right in the middle of about a dozen antique/junk stores!  You dream it, we will figure out how to Craft it at the Urb!   So, bring your own group or sign up for one of my themed retreats listed on my calendar.
Let me tell you details about the retreat!
It’s a 1940’s home in the Historical District of Huntsville that has been converted to host overnight groups of up to 10 people.  Each person has their own bed and work station.  There are 3 bedrooms with 4 beds each, all bedding and towels are included, 2 full baths, patio, loading ramp, fully equipped kitchen, TV, internet, and tons of inspiration.  For the quilters and sewists, we have an ironing station and a cutting station.  For the scrapbookers, we have a Cricut station, dozens of cartridges, and hundreds of stamps.  There is plenty of light and each person gets use of a padded rolling office chair.  We have a ‘store’ for those forgotten items like tape or thread and some fun items like buttons, ribbon, fat quarters, scrapbook kits and embellishments.
For an additional cost, we can make arrangements to prepare your food, snacks, or provide pick-up/delivery. However, coffee, tea, bottled water and ice are provided.  We also have a restaurant map posted.  Our cook has a degree in Culinary Arts and would be happy to prepare any of your meals during your stay.
For a girl’s weekend, we have mapped out the best restaurants and shops.  There is even a dance hall and a gun range if you want to experience the wild side.  Huntsville has several interesting museums — The Sam Houston Memorial Museum, The H.E.A.R.T.S. Veteran Museum, and the Prison Museum.  There is also a Cemetery tour and several historical home tours that are open on the weekend and last…the famous Sam Houston Statue and gift shop.
Gather your friends and enjoy a creative weekend quilting, scrapbooking, crafting or antiquing…..whatever your passion.  Take a creative Journey and bring a bunch of friends with you!  Look at the calendar for scheduled retreats and available dates to reserve for your personal retreat group.
